Interior Design: Field Trip @ Wei-Ling Art Gallery
Interior Design students had a splendid afternoon at Wei-Ling Art Gallery located in Brickfields. Wei-Ling Gallery encompasses the development of Malaysia’s contemporary art for over a decade now. With the opening of the gallery’s second space in Kuala Lumpur, Wei-Ling Contemporary, in 2011 and its third space in Penang in 2013, the gallery has further strengthened itself as the largest commercial gallery in Malaysia.
It was an idle pick for the tour, due to their expertise in converting and transforming a traditional space to an Art Gallery. The tour to this gallery started off by observing the difference areas of the gallery, as this is to make our young undergraduates appreciate the importance of Malaysian historical buildings. Wei-Ling Art Gallery is a perfect example of a renovation project for ID students and this experience could ignite some creative ideas in their future projects.
Miss Shaza, the curator of the art gallery was very helpful in assisting the students. Some of the briefing that she provided to students was on how to reconvert and old traditional house in a Contemporary Art Gallery, the history of the building and how the Art gallery space used to be. Furthermore, Raffles students also had a full tour and a briefing about the current exhibition Words Become Art by the local artist Sun Kang Jye.
Overall this was a fruitful and rewarding trip. It would not have been successful without the assistance of Miss Shaza and the opportunity provided by Wei Ling Art gallery.
